The Shelter and Rescue Work Certificate is an advanced and challenging program of study, exploring many aspects of working in the dog sheltering and rescue environment. The Shelter and Rescue Work Certificate explores the principles of behavior, domestic behavioral assessment strategies within the shelter environment; training and behavior modification techniques for shelter and rescue environments; disease risk management; environmental enrichment and emotional health management of dogs in shelters; the adoption process itself, and operations of shelters and rescue organizations.
This program requires Class participation (email list). The program will involve active learning. This program requires you to access several peer reviewed journal articles. You can find some of these online. Others may have to be accessed through a library.
The graduate would be awarded a Shelter and Rescue Work Certificate and allowed the letters Cert.SRW after their name.
This program requires approximately 350 work-hours; 25 hours in actual assignment preparation.

Learning Objectives:
- Explain the various roles within the shelter and rescue environment
- Identify and describe some of the more common temperament evaluation instruments available
- Describe training endeavors for animals in the shelter and rescue environment to make them better adoption candidates
- Describe how to provide environmental enrichment to maintain the shelter animal's behavioral well-being
- Explain the adoption process of matching potential guardians with dogs

Schedule:
This program is self-paced within a 1 year time limit.
Entrance Requirements: Entrance into this program requires that you have completed a high school diploma program (exceptions can be made) and that you be at least 18 years of age. This is a professional development course. Applicants must have had worked in or run a shelter and rescue operations at some point. This can be covered by volunteer work.
Note: The program is not vocational and is intended as a personal interest program or as professional development for animal trainers and behaviour technologists to help them improve or upgrade their knowledge and skills. The program does not provide all the skills and knowledge required to obtain employment as an Animal Behavior Technologist. Further, hands on, supervised development of mechanical skills are also necessary.
