Program Description

The Diploma of Ethology is an in-depth and well rounded examination of the behavior of animals. This program does not focus on a single species but rather looks at the commonalties and distinctions in the behavior of many species. The program starts with a solid foundation in understanding critical thinking, which will aid in evaluating information and in presenting information of your own. From there the student moves on to examine the common areas on animal behavior. With a foundation of general animal behavior the student will focus on principles of learning, which may be used to explain the behavior of animals. Another common theoretical orientation for understanding behavior is the biological approach. Students will learn about the biological foundations of behavior. A third prominent theoretical orientation in understanding behavior is the cognitive approach. The following course explores the cognition of animals. Finally the student is exposed to the principles of the scientific approach and specifically how to evaluate and carry out research in animal behavior. In the end the graduate will have a solid foundational appreciation of the three primary theoretical approaches to understanding animal behavior: behaviorism, biological and cognitive. The student will also have a solid understanding of reasoning and research methods.
