Optional Practicum Module

The Dog Daycare Practicum is an optional, add-on module to the Diploma of Dog Daycare. It is not required. If a graduate of the dog daycare program would like to upgrade their diploma to include a practical hands-on component they may carry out the practicum requirements and apply for the upgrade in the diploma and transcript.

The graduate is responsible for finding a dog daycare that will accept them as a volunteer (or paid employee) and for any arrangements made between the dog daycare and the graduate.

Requirements:

  • 72 hours of hands on volunteer work including
  • Supervise dog play
  • Walk dogs and/or supervise outdoor activities
  • Clean & sanitize (floors, play equipment, toys, walls etc.)
  • Greet clients and bring dogs in at drop-off
  • Speak to clients and deliver their dogs to them at pick-up
  • Assist with a new dog evaluation
  • Assist with an introduction of a new dog to the playgroup

The dog daycare must operate a full service dog daycare taking in at least five (5) dogs on days the volunteer works, have a valid business license and full insurance. The owner or manager of the dog daycare must write a report and send it directly to CASI on their letterhead stating the volunteer's full name, number of hours worked and specific duties carried out by the volunteer.

To apply for this module, graduates simply have to contact us before or after carrying out the practicum work so we are expecting the report from the dog daycare when it comes in. The applicant must pay an administrative fee to CASI of $100 cdn. When the fee and the report have been received, evaluated and accepted a new diploma and transcript will be issued identifying the hands-on practicum module.
