Program Description and Objectives
The Applied Animal Herbalism program is a totally unique, advanced and in-depth, program of study in the use of herbs for animals; it incorporates book learning, drawings, and hands-on projects within its program of study. Graduates will have a solid foundational knowledge of all important topics in herbal remedies and supplements for companion animals.
Are you looking for a fun and interesting challenge? Do you want a solid understanding of the science behind using herbs for animals as well as the history and folklore? If so, this program of study may be just what you need.
This program is informative and a one-of-a kind opportunity to learn about this field! The assignments in this program are short fill-in-the-blank type answers, multiple choice, true and false, and short essays and case studies. Students can expect to do a lot of reading and learning in this program, exploring the various topics in depth at an advanced level. We recommend, but do not require, that students have a high school senior level science or biology course as preparation.
This program requires approximately 300 work-hours; 20 hours in actual assignment preparation.
Graduates will be awarded a Applied Animal Herbalism Certificate (Cert.AAH).
Students should emerge from this program of study with a detailed understanding of:
- A history of using herbs
- Terminology used in both herbology and botanical sciences
- How to make your own tinctures, extracts, poultices, fomentations, salves, etc.
- Twenty of the more commonly used herbs with information included on sixty others.
- How to harvest your own herbs
- How to tell the quality of herbs
- Which herbs can be used for which body systems
- Toxicology and the safe use of herbs
- How to identify plants in the wild
- Simple recipes to get you started
