Course Title: Materia Medica - 423

Course Description:

This in-depth course is a Materia Medica of 80 herbs. Twenty of the most common herbs used for pets and humans are discussed in detail including descriptions, actions, common uses, dosages, and resources to further study each herb. There are also 60 other herbs discussed in a more brief format but still providing insight into actions, common uses, and interesting facts about each. The course also provides cautions and contraindications for each herb as well as possible interactions with other medications. This course is evaluated by way of written assignments.

Students should emerge from this course with the ability to analyze and discuss the following topic areas:

  • How to use a Materia Medica
  • Deciding on which herbs should and should not be used in different situations
  • Determine which herbs complement each other
  • Identify possible side effects and interactions
  • Be able to identify the different families of herbs and their similarities
