Course Title: Introduction to Herbalism - 421

Course Description:

This foundational course will examine some of the general information needed to start understanding the field of animal herbalism. This information will prepare the student for more in-depth studies in the field of herbalism and will prepare the student for follow-up courses. The course explores definitions, history, and some of the basics concerning plant chemistry. This course is evaluated by way of written assignments.

Students should emerge from this course with the ability to analyze and discuss the following topic areas:

  • Definition of herb
  • How herbs work in the body
  • How herbal knowledge has been passed down through history
  • Historical figures involved with herbalism
  • Basic understanding of some of the important plant constituents
  • The difference between using whole herbs versus isolated constituents
  • Doctrine of Signatures
