298 - Dog Training Practicum

Program Description

A practicum is a course in an academic program of study requiring hands on skill practice. In the Dog Training Practicum students will have the opportunity to gain valuable hands on experience in a structured and formal manner that will be assessed and awarded academic credit toward diploma programs of study. It will show on your Diploma. Below find the general requirements for the practicum. Upon enrollment the student will recieve detailed instructions. 

Please be sure you have available the group or private classes available and permission to carry out your observation prior to enrolling. We require a form to be filled out by the business owner or instructor. Any fees the trainer requires will be the responsibility of the student. If the business owner or trainer has any questions please have them contact us for details. The form is simply a confirmation of your presence and attention.

Requirements

  • Observe an entire series of puppy classes (at least 5 classes in the consecutive series)
  • Observe an entire series of basic good manners classes (at least 5 classes in the consecutive series)
  • Train a unique behavior on "tape" (requires administrative approval. Must be a greater than basic level behavior)
  • Shape a unique sequence of responses on tape (requires administrative approval. Must be a complex behavior)
  • Coach a friend, relative or other volunteer in basic dog training on "tape" (at least 3 hours of instruction and at a level that the dog is at)

Video Requirements

I require that all "video taped" submitted be on DVD or CD in mpeg format. There are services readily available for conversion of formats if necessary.

Coaching a Volunteer Requirements

Liability insurance is suggested. Liability insurance for dog trainers can be found through the Association of Pet Dog Trainers or Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers or other professional associations. Having your volunteer sign a contract / liability waiver is strongly suggested also. CASI assumes no liability for any damages caused by the actions of the student or the dog being trained.

Schedule

The program begins as soon as your enrollment is complete and you receive your enrollment package. Although we allow 6 months for this course, you are free to complete the course sooner if you can, and we do allow extensions if need be.

Prerequisites

Practicum modules are only available for graduates from select diploma programs.

Fee

$400 Cdn. (Currency Converter) + 4% fee for for online payments. Canadian Residents 5% GST.
