Course Title: Shelter / Rescue Externship - 236
Credits: 3 (Approx. 42 work-hours)

Course Description
The externship builds on the course work and independent project and exposes the student to an actual shelter or rescue working environment. The student will gain valuable experience observing the operations of a real shelter and carry out specific tasks.Requirements:
- Volunteer work in a shelter or rescue operation
- 100 hours
- Letter from shelter/rescue manager required stating hours completed and tasks carried out.
- Specific tasks
- Kennel/cage cleaning and disinfection
- Animal feeding/watering
- Walk dogs
- Observe intake procedure
- Observe adoption procedure
- Facility upkeep and cleaning not directly related to animal care (sweeping floors, doing laundry, cleaning bowls, painting, landscaping, etc.)
- Administrative tasks (filing, photocopying, data entry, collecting voicemail, etc.)
- Observe temperament evaluations or other criteria used to select animals for adoption
- Assist with or observe daily veterinary concerns including but not limited to medication of ill or injured animals and vaccinations

The course begins as soon as your enrollment is complete and you receive your enrollment package. Although we allow 6 months for this course, you are free to complete the course sooner if you can, and we do allow extensions if need be.
Prerequisites
All previous courses in the Diploma of Shelter and Rescue program (may be done concurrent with 235).
Tuition
$350 Cdn. (Currency Converter) + 4% fee for for online payments. Textbooks not included in tuition. They may be purchased through http://www.dogwise.com, http://www.amazon.com, http://www.abebooks.com or http://www.half.com in most cases. Also check the Student Library. Canadian Residents 5% GST. Most public libraries will either have journal articles or can get them through inter-library loans. University libraries are more likely to have them on site.
