Course Description

This course provided an exploration of the cognitive abilities of nonhuman animals. Rather than focussing on speculative mental states this course addresses cognitive capabilities and skills.

Students should emerge from this course with a foundationalunderstanding of:

  • Object knowledge
  • Numerical abilities
  • Spacial abilities
  • Sense of self
  • Tool use
  • Deceit
  • Communication
  • Morality in animals

  • Wild Minds What Animals Really Think by Marc Hauser
  • (Recommended but not required): Animal Learning and Cognition edited by N. J. Mackintosh
